The Importance of our Mission

It is the intention of this mission to be our North Star that reflects values that resonate across all backgrounds and faiths, creating a school environment that celebrates and honors different beliefs.

TPS was founded purposefully as an independent school outside of religious or state authority. TPS was founded by Catholic families who had a unique vision for our school that was rooted in a clear set of values. Today, we recognize that our founding values transcend all religions. We are now at a place where we proudly stand up honoring the past, celebrating our school community today, and looking towards the future.

Our Board of Trustees takes its role in evaluating our school mission with seriousness and thoughtfulness. Aligning with our responsibility as an independent school to review and revise our mission to reflect who we are today, the Board of Trustees has drafted and approved a revised school mission.

This mission update was the first step in our strategic planning process. Because this is a community activity, we have invited everyone in our community, past and present, through in-person and online, individual and group, forms of feedback throughout the last three years.

Our mission is the north star to support the finalization of our Strategic Plan which will be unveiled at the State of the School. We invite you on Wednesday, February 26, 2025 to this most important State of the School where we will share our Strategic Plan and allow time for families to ask questions. We have assembled an FAQ below for any immediate questions.

What makes Sonoma's Only Independent School Unique?

The Presentation School is an intentional community devoted to the growth and welfare of young people. We all work towards understanding and embodying the values that form the philosophical foundation for our School: especially the mission’s entreaty to LOVE, LEARN, and LEAD.

LOVE

We strive to create graduates who have developed a greater sense of themselves and their roles as active community builders. We strive to create kind graduates who embody the values of love, gratitude, respect, service and integrity.

LEARN

We strive to create graduates who are both critical and creative thinkers, strong and effective communicators, and collaborative problem-solvers.

LEAD

We strive to create graduates who are of service to others and their community. We strive to create graduates who communicate respectfully and clearly, who can and will speak up for others, and can clearly explain what they think and why.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Vision Statement

The Presentation School strives to embody each of the values of LOVE, LEARN and LEAD by cultivating a school culture that is welcoming and accessible to families of all backgrounds and authentically reflects the wide range of experiences of our local community. In doing so we commit to exploring, better understanding and acting upon elements that affect our community, including promoting Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.

As working definitions, we learn from the following words of the Anti-Defamation League:

Diversity: The presence of variety within a group. The population of the United States is made up of people belonging to a diversity of groups characterized by culture, race, ethnicity, nationality, gender, sexual orientation, ability, etc.

Equity: Everyone getting what they need in order to have access, opportunities and a fair chance to succeed. It recognizes that the same for everyone (equality) doesn’t truly address needs and therefore, specific solutions and remedies, which may be different, are necessary.

Inclusion: An environment and commitment to respect, represent and accept diverse social groups and identities; an environment where all people feel like they belong.
