Dot Kowal

Dot Kowal was born and raised on the east coast and earned her BA in English from Williams College in Williamstown, MA. After graduating, she moved to California to pursue a career in film and music in Los Angeles.

Graduate school and a career change brought her to the Bay Area, which is when she began working in independent schools.

After working in college counseling for a decade, Dot is now the Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at Sonoma Academy in Santa Rosa. Her work is and always has been about making a difference in individual lives through equity-minded and inclusive practices and policies. Right now, she also sees her job as fighting for equality and justice in the greater community. She is a facilitator for the California Teacher Development Collaborative (CATDC) and sits on the board of directors of Northern California POCIS (People of Color in Independent Schools). Currently, she consults for a variety of schools in the bay area. She lives in Petaluma with her husband and two daughters. You can read Dot’s thoughts on independent school leadership in the Fall 2021 edition of NAIS’s Independent School Magazine here.
